Spaces and relations at these markets replicate what occurs in the immediate urban and socio-economic context in which they are located (...) what is left visible and what is being hidden (as dirtiness and poverty) (…) the way [food] negotiations take place, the spaces allowed for all of this to happen. Depending on the economic interests markets may raise, for public or private actors, their conditions can range from being in severe decline to being subject of profit-led transformations, all of these interventions with questionable benefits for the residents implied. However, for their daily users, markets still play the role of community centres, providing values that exceed those of commercial order and feeding a sense of common belonging, on top of privatising and individualising trends in modern cities.
