The market was a social institution, a place to visit, an opportunity to get away from loneliness (…).
— Schneider, 1945 (p.262)

The aim of these explorations is to raise attention on the roles and values markets provide today, as well as on their contemporary modes of operation and use. Apart from their economic activities, these offer valuable opportunities for civic encounter and participation in urban politics that are largely lost in many other realms of modern living.

I expect to invite more actors to participate in markets’ making and planning, to protect these spaces of urban connection, the livelihoods that rely on these local economies, and also to engage with the responsible management of enduring forms of provisioning and wellbeing for our urban communities.
